Umphakatsi Cultural Experience

Visit Mlilwane's neighbouring real Chief's Village to experience authentic Swazi culture.

Enjoy a hands-on experience of our neighbouring lady chief 'Inkhosikati' in her homestead 'Umphakatsi' - a very real glimpse of Swaziland's culture that will leave you with a newfound respect and basic understanding of the Swazi way of life.

Your guide, who will hand the ladies in your party traditional Swazi cloths 'Emahiya' to wrap around their waists, greets you at Mlilwane's main gate. The homestead is a short drive from the main gate and a short walk from Mlilwane's boundary fence.

Before entering the Inkhosikati's homestead 'Liguma', you are requested to remove your shoes. On entry, the Inkhosikati and the village children, often wearing traditional clothing, will warmly welcome you. The standard Swazi greeting to the Inkosikati is 'Nkosi'.

The Inkhosikati has a vibrant, energetic and infectious mannerism and not only talks you through how the huts and traditional items are made but also teaches you the siSwati words for them. She encourages interaction; so ladies try your hand at grinding maize and plaiting mountain grass or gents, join the children in Swazi song and dance.

This is both informative and memorable - a taste of true Swazi hospitality - and should not be missed!

On arrival at reception, guests are escorted to the Chubeka Trails Stable where they receive a refreshing soft drink and an introduction to their horse and itinerary, in addition to a safety briefing.

Following the briefing, riders mount their horse and proceed on the trail. After all the excitement of the day and dinner, guests drift off in very comfortable bed rolls inside the cave.

Reviews at Reilly's Rock

Niki Torbett - UK on 10 June 2012

I stayed at Reillys Rock with a large group of friends for the weekend of the Imvelo Mountain Bike race and can honestly say that it was the experience of a lifetime. Lovely Ruth and Lizzie could not be more accommodating if they tried, Feeding the bush babies at night with Mumba were special moments rivalled only by the daily eating of breakfast in the company of birds and wildlife. Bonfires and BBQ at night with the most infectious atmosphere. If you can get a group of your friends together for a stay at Reillys you will not be disappointed. Home from home, from home! Thank you.

Clemens Bruehl - SA on 29 March 2012

The lodge is on top of a mountain and it is nearly impossible to describe it. Very green, really nice ambience, old colonial style. Everything is just great. The staff are very, very friendly. Very personal. Great place to relax and enjoy the surrounding Milwane sanctuary.

Kevin Alspaugh - South Africa on 26 March 2012

The service and ambiance were both amazing! We had a lovely time enjoying the peacefulness and the views from the lodge.

Griebhammer - Germany on 23 January 2012

Very nice stay, Lizzy is a good cook. Thank you for everything!

Mr Kurt B - Switzerland on 24 November 2011

The historic colonial houses of this lodge are very charming as are Ruth and her amiable staff. We will certainly come back soon.

Ms Leonie B. - South Africa on 22 December 2010

Great breakfast and dinner as well

Mrs Joy J - United States on 21 June 2010

Reilly's Rock is a one-of-a-kind guesthouse that must be experienced if you are traveling through Swaziland. The service is extremely friendly and welcoming. The dinner is fantastic, one of our most memorable on a month-long trip. The setting within a private nature reserve adds another dimension of peace and tranquility to the experience as well as numerous activities if you are staying for several days.

Mrs Janine K - Netherlands on 13 May 2009

The best place we've ever stayed!!!!!

Mrs Charlotte H - United Kingdom on 15 March 2009

Our stay at Reilly's Rock Lodge was an amazing experience, the views, the house and hospitality made it so enjoyable, not to mention the location, Millwaine Wildlife sanctuary was superb.
